The decision to find a psychologist is an individualized decision. While qualifications of the psychologist are important to consider, so too are the issues and problems you wish to address, your needs for access to services, and how comfortable you are discussing these issues with the psychologist. Asking these eight questions can assist you in making an informed decision prior to scheduling or during an initial consultation.
Inquire about their degree and their supervised clinical experiences. In addition, inquire regarding their experience addressing the types of issues you have indicated you want assistance with. Be certain to inquire regarding any current licensure requirements needed to perform their advertised roles, and if their education credentials match the types of services they provide. An experienced provider should be willing and able to describe their education and license clearly.
Provide details as to why you believe you need psychological counseling and ask about their past success working with individuals with similar concerns whether anxiety, grief, trauma, relationship difficulties etc. You don't need a diagnosis to ask this question.
Psychotherapists may use approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing, Psychodynamic Therapy etc. Ask them how they would adapt their approach to best meet your goals. A clear explanation is more useful than a list of techniques.
Typically, early sessions focus primarily upon developing a basic understanding of your concerns and history, establishing mutual goals for the treatment plan, and determining whether there are barriers to achieving those objectives. Ask them if they anticipate that most of the time spent during early sessions will be focused on describing your concerns vs. practicing new skills between sessions. Also ask when you can reasonably expect that you both will come to agreement on the development of a mutually agreed-upon treatment plan.
Positive outcomes can take many forms including reduction of symptomatology, improvement in daily functioning, increased ability to cope with stressors etc. Ask them how and when they will evaluate your progress and what their criteria for "success" are. Additionally ask them what alternatives exist if the approach being used is not resulting in sufficient positive outcome.
Ask about their typical recommendations for how frequently you should meet, which hours they generally keep available for appointments, and how flexible they are with regard to rescheduling appointments. Generally speaking, having a schedule that allows for consistent attendance is much more beneficial than having a schedule that creates difficulty with attending regularly scheduled appointments.
Clarify their session fee, duration of each session, payment and cancellation procedures, and availability of online versus in-person sessions. Reasonably enough, it's fair to discuss with the therapist what financial and logistical constraints apply to your life.
Ask how your information and records are handled, whether sessions can be conducted privately online. And ask them if there are any limitations placed on confidentiality due to potential safety and legal considerations. Ideally you should get an answer that you can easily comprehend.
Online sessions might be more convenient than attending in-person sessions since travel time, job responsibilities, or being stuck in Delhi NCR traffic will no longer be obstacles to maintaining consistent attendance at each of your scheduled appointments. On the other hand, in-person sessions would likely provide a better environment for those who want a private space to engage with a therapist or require a service where a face-to-face assessment is needed. Speak with the clinician about what works best for you in terms of scheduling your next appointment. The most suitable option will depend on your specific circumstances, your comfort levels regarding privacy, as well as your own personal preferences.
You can determine how comfortable you feel with your new therapist (or the one you have been working with) based upon your experiences during the first few sessions. Ask yourself these questions after your first session:
Were you able to express yourself without fear of being interrupted?
Were you able to ask questions to clarify anything that was unclear.
Did the therapist clearly articulate his/her approach to treating individuals with problems similar to yours.
Keep in mind that it is possible to feel anxious, uncomfortable, or emotionally vulnerable after a productive session. This does not necessarily mean that you do not like your therapist or that you do not want to continue seeing them. It usually takes several visits to truly understand how you connect with someone and some therapists may also suggest that there are issues that should be addressed. You can always speak up and share any feelings you have..
If you find that your therapist is consistently discrediting you, making promises of "cures", unable to describe their background and training, or handling sensitive information poorly then this may be a good opportunity to seek out another therapist. If you feel that you have not received the kind of treatment you deserve from your current therapist, you should discuss changing your plans with your therapist or request a referral to see someone else.
There are many ways to locate a licensed psychologist in Delhi NCR. You can start by searching through professional listings, asking for referrals from a trusteddoctor, or contacting an organization that offers mental health services and has a clearly defined screening process. Check the individual clinician’s credentials and experience, even when booking through a clinic.
At Adayu, we begin by understanding what support you are looking for and help identify an appropriate clinician and level of care. If you are unsure whether outpatient therapy is the right starting point, an initial conversation can help you explore the available options.
